Headline: Dollar indecision and a composed Asian handoff leave the NY session watching a handful of pair setups for directional confirmation into month-end.
Regime
The macro tape arrives at the NY pre-open in a state of modest, contained pressure. SPX closed at 7,720.39, off −0.31% on the session, while VIX printed 17.2 — up fractionally on the day but well within normal bounds, leaving the RISK volatility state Calm. The RATES channel offers no strong directional signal: DXY sits at 101.831 after a marginal drift lower, and the volatility regime there is likewise Calm. BTC's 30-day correlation to SPX has climbed to 0.61 — meaningfully above its 90-day reading of 0.34 — suggesting the crypto complex is currently functioning more as a RISK proxy than a structurally uncorrelated asset; its 90-day negative relationship to DXY remains intact as a background condition, though the 30-day figure has compressed toward zero, meaning the dollar's softness is not transmitting cleanly into crypto at the current tempo. CARRY and regional funding channels show no stress: USDCNH held at 6.658, copper at 6.579, and AUDUSD at 0.703 collectively suggest Asian cyclicals are not pricing any near-term growth scare, leaving the handoff into NY clean and undisrupted.
Setup Into the Session
The firmest directional read entering NY is USDJPY (sell, ●●●○), where price has been compressing beneath a nearby resistance level and a break lower would extend an already-established sequence of declining highs — the RISK and RATES backdrop does not argue against yen firmness at the margin. AUDUSD (buy, ●●○○) carries a constructive read supported by the stable Asian cyclical backdrop, though conviction is tempered by the absence of a decisive push through near-term resistance. GBPUSD (buy, ●●○○) is developing toward actionable on the shorter timeframe, but the broader daily picture frames a competing sell thesis that constrains confidence. DXY (buy, ●○○○) is the weakest read on the list: spot is compressing toward the lower bound of the range that defines the setup, and the prior session's soft drift in RATES does not offer strong tailwind — this one is context rather than a primary watch. USDSEK, USDCHF, and USDMXN have directional reads internally but lack the level clarity to appear on the primary watchlist at this pre-open juncture. EURUSD, USDCAD, USDZAR, and several other pairs offer no actionable setup into this session and are not on the watchlist.
What I'm Watching
- USDJPY — SELL ●●●○ — activates on a break and hold below 157.173; invalidated on acceptance back above 157.42.
- AUDUSD — BUY ●●○○ — activates on a sustained move through and hold above 0.70406; invalidated on a break below 0.7021.
- GBPUSD — BUY ●●○○ — activates on a confirmed push and hold above 1.34339; invalidated on a reversion back through 1.33999 toward the broader support zone, which would indicate the larger-timeframe sell structure is asserting dominance.
- DXY — BUY ●○○○ — activates on a move toward and through 102.6318; invalidated on a decisive daily close beneath 101.5478, which would also weaken the dollar-supportive read across the pairs above.
What Would Change My Mind
If DXY were to close the NY session decisively below 101.5478, collapsing the range that underpins the current tentative dollar-supportive read and inverting the CARRY signal across the dollar pairs, the working hypothesis — contained softness rather than a trend break — would require wholesale reassessment, and that distinction is testable today.
