Headline: DXY treads water just above 99 as a calm Asian hand-off delivers NY pre-open into a session where the firmest setups lean against the dollar.
Regime
VIX at 16.46 ticked modestly higher on the day but remains in settled territory — RISK is contained, not alarmed. SPX closed at 7591.7, slipping a modest 0.6% in an orderly drift rather than any structural break. DXY at 99.026 is effectively unchanged, holding the 99 handle as a contested midpoint within a broader sideways range. The volatility regime across RATES is Calm, keeping rate dynamics as background texture rather than an active disruptor at the open. The Asian session handed off cleanly: USDCNH at 6.7066 and overnight HIBOR at 2.2756 signal orderly yuan funding, the CARRY channel is quiet, and Asian risk proxies — Nikkei at 64010 and AUDUSD at 0.7178 — are constructive rather than generating headwinds. First meaningful price discovery of the NY session will need to come from domestic data or flow.
Setup Into the Session
The sell side of the dollar carries the stronger reads into NY. The firmest is USDMXN (sell, ●●●○), where price has built out a well-defined resistance band and the structure is mature — the setup is ripening rather than early. GBPUSD (sell, ●●○○) follows with a ceiling in place around 1.3527, though conviction is moderate and the setup requires NY flow to do the work of confirming directional intent. DXY itself frames these reads as context: the broader daily range reinforces the sell-side lean without constituting an independent vehicle. On the buy side, USDCHF (buy, ●○○○) is incomplete — the structure is building but a confirming move has not yet printed, so it enters the session as a developing watch rather than an active read. USDSEK is framework-aware on a buy basis but lacks the historical backing to carry execution conviction, so it remains off the active list. EURUSD, AUDUSD, and USDZAR each carry conditions the framework treats as inconclusive and are not on the watchlist for this session.
What I'm Watching
- USDMXN — SELL ●●●○ — activates on a sustained break and hold below 16.9443; invalidated on acceptance back above 17.0097.
- GBPUSD — SELL ●●○○ — activates on a confirmed break and hold below 1.3490; invalidated on a clean close above 1.3527.
- USDCHF — BUY ●○○○ — activates on a confirmed break and hold above 0.8155; invalidated on a close back below 0.8142.
What Would Change My Mind
A NY session close by DXY above 99.92 — breaking the ceiling of its current range outright — would force a full reassessment of the dollar-softness bias running through USDMXN, GBPUSD, and the broader setup, returning the framework to a neutral posture.
