NY opens with a mildly risk-off equity tape and a rudderless dollar, setting the backdrop for a cluster of USD-sell reads across several pairs.

Headline: NY opens with a mildly risk-off equity tape and a rudderless dollar, setting the backdrop for a cluster of USD-sell reads across several pairs.

Regime

SPX settled at 7,631.47, off 0.71% in the prior session, while VIX edged to 14.92 — a level that sits comfortably below its long-run median, leaving the RATES volatility regime firmly in the Calm state. DXY arrives at 99.75, effectively unchanged overnight and pinned just below the 100 handle without directional conviction. The Asian handoff offered no amplification: USDCNH is steady at 6.7217, overnight HIBOR at 2.94%, and credit spreads are quiet, so the CARRY channel inherits no funding-market stress from the Asia session. Nikkei, copper, and AUDUSD arrived without distress signals, meaning the RISK channel enters NY on a neutral footing rather than a pressured one. Worth noting in the medium frame: BTC's 90-day correlation to DXY sits at −0.47, suggesting crypto is presently more responsive to dollar direction than to equity RISK — a configuration that reinforces the dollar as the session's primary read.

Setup Into the Session

The firmest read is USDJPY (sell, ●●●○), where daily and intraday structure align on the sell side and the intraday setup carries the strongest underlying conviction of anything approaching activation today. DXY itself carries a sell lean (●●○○) — the dollar is capped just below a meaningful resistance level and has not shown any overnight impulse to reclaim it. USDCAD (sell, ●○○○) has a light directional lean on multiple timeframes, but daily-level history is negative, so confluence is weak and conviction stays minimal. USDMXN (sell, ●○○○) is on the periphery — a trigger level exists but the evidential base behind it is thin. On the buy side, EURUSD and USDCHF present opposing reads to the USD-sell thesis but carry histories that limit their framework weight; they are noted but not on the active watchlist. AUDUSD has a buy lean at the daily level but its track record is similarly uninspiring. GBPUSD, NZDUSD, and USDZAR show no mature setup and are not on the watchlist.

What I'm Watching

  • USDJPY — SELL ●●●○ — activates on a break and hold below 159.428; invalidated on acceptance back above 160.273.
  • DXY — SELL ●●○○ — activates on a sustained break below 98.529; invalidated on a confirmed hold above 99.883.
  • USDCAD — SELL ●○○○ — activates on a break and hold below 1.3909; invalidated on acceptance back above 1.3940.
  • USDMXN — SELL ●○○○ — activates on a break and hold below 16.844; invalidated on a recovery and hold above 17.005.

What Would Change My Mind

If DXY were to break above 99.883 and sustain that level through the NY session, the entire multi-pair USD-sell alignment would require a full reassessment — the current read is a working hypothesis, not a conviction, and the dollar reclaiming that ceiling would be the single clearest signal that the tape has shifted.
