Dollar softness and a calm handoff from Asia leave RATES and CARRY dynamics at the centre of the session, with USDJPY and DXY the primary watchpoints as New York opens.

Headline: Dollar softness and a calm handoff from Asia leave RATES and CARRY dynamics at the centre of the session, with USDJPY and DXY the primary watchpoints as New York opens.

Regime

The macro tape arrives at the NY open in a muted, softening configuration. VIX closed at 15.46 — a modest uptick on the session yet still comfortably below its long-run mean — and the volatility regime within RATES remains Calm, offering no structural impediment to risk appetite. SPX settled at 7728.2, a shallow drift rather than a directional break, while DXY closed at 99.646, down fractionally on the day and sustaining its fragile position beneath the 100 handle. The Asian session transmitted without disruption: USDCNH near 6.744 and overnight HIBOR at 2.10 point to orderly yuan funding, and Asian cyclicals — Nikkei at 67100, copper at 6.634, AUDUSD near 0.707 — held constructively, reinforcing a broadly supportive RISK tone into the handoff. HY credit spreads at 2.7 corroborate that CARRY stress is not an active headwind; the path into the session is one of controlled RISK appetite and no distress signal from RATES.

Setup Into the Session

The firmest directional read is USDJPY (sell, ●●●○), where the short-term structure has reached a point of potential continuation and offers the most coherent case for follow-through among all pairs in view. USDMXN (sell, ●○○○) carries a plausible transmission story through CARRY and the supportive EM RISK tone, though it remains an early, lower-conviction read. DXY (buy, ●●○○) sits mid-range and merits attention on any NY push toward the upper end of its recent range; the setup is structurally present but not yet activated. AUDUSD (sell, ●○○○) holds a structural sell orientation on the daily timeframe, but the framework's own quality filter flags this as a marginal case — it is on the radar for monitoring only. USDCHF, USDSEK, and NZDUSD all carry reads that do not clear the quality threshold and are not on the watchlist. USDCAD has early buy-side structure forming but is too embryonic for directional conviction.

What I'm Watching

  • USDJPY — SELL ●●●○ — activates on a confirmed break and hold below 158.653; invalidated on acceptance back above 158.818.
  • DXY — BUY ●●○○ — activates on a sustained push and closing hold above 100.443; invalidated on a daily close below 98.525.
  • USDMXN — SELL ●○○○ — activates on a break and daily close below 17.0008; invalidated on a recapture and hold above 17.027.
  • AUDUSD — SELL ●○○○ — activates on a NY session close that sustains pressure below 0.70866; invalidated on a confirmed break and hold above 0.70889.

What Would Change My Mind

A DXY reclaim and close above 100.443, or an SPX session decline large enough to lift VIX materially and shift the RATES volatility regime from Calm toward Elevated, would require a full reassessment of the dollar-soft, controlled-RISK working hypothesis that currently frames every read above.
